Keep moving through the colder months

Active April is at an end, and thousands of Victorians visited our YMCA centres statewide as they endeavoured to be more active over the month. We encourage keeping up your physical activity and aiming for 30 minutes of exercise per day for the rest of the year, and beyond.

Government guidelines recommend a minimum of 150 minutes per week for adults, that’s 30 minutes five days a week. There are so many benefits, you can even increase your lifespan! However, we know as the months get colder, it can make it harder to find the motivation to get out and about. So we’ve put together some top tips for keeping active over Winter.

  • If you’ve got small children and finding childcare is an issue, you can still exercise at home. Look up free workouts on YouTube such as yoga, Pilates or aerobics and do them in your living room.*

  • Try some indoor activities, such as training in the gym, group classes or joining a local indoor sports team.

  • Go swimming. Yes swimming is for all seasons! Many YMCA centres across Victoria have indoor pools which are heated year round, so you don’t have to give up swimming even though the sunny days have disappeared.

  • Make sure you have the right gear. You can still go for your usual run, walk or bike around your local neighbourhood but make sure you’re wearing the right clothes. Supportive running shoes and many light layers to keep you warm, but that you can peel off as you heat up. A water resistant spray jacket would be helpful for rainy days.

  • Get a buddy. Having a friend that you meet to workout with can help you keep up the motivation when you find it hard to leave the comfort of your warm house.

  • Go straight to the gym after work. Pack your workout gear the night before and head there after you finish your day, without going home first. It’s much harder to get motivated once you’re already in your house and on the couch.

Most of all, remember that getting active is not just for Premier’s Active April! Make sure you keep up your activity throughout the year.
